The Drums Beat Loud!

Artane shocked into silence on home soil

Artane Beaumont ... 1  Drumcondra ... 3
BY RACHEL BERESFORD, TARGET, THE STAR,  6th December 2011

DRUMCONDRA FC stunned hosts Artane Beaumont on Sunday morning, with a comfortable 3-1 victory over the league leaders on their own turf.
The loss is a massive blow to Artane, as the gap at the top of the Under-12C table tightens with Lusk United and Hartstown/Huntstown both hot on their heels.
A win would have seen them go four points clear of their closest rivals but Drumcondra have denied them room for error now, keeping up their away form; the same form that has seen them notch up their only two victories this season.
Artane had a promising start too with Gavin Markey putting them ahead late in the first 30. The hosts dropped their heads after taking the lead though and this cost them dearly with David Boylan equalising on the stroke of half-time.
And before long, Artane were undone by their visitors, who cameflying out of the traps early in the second half to secure a third win on the road.

Battle

The first half was a tight battle between these two footballing sides, who were enjoying getting the ball down and playing a passing game.
This created a stalemate though, as the game was confined to the middle of the park for a good quarter of an hour.
Drumcondra soon found their feet up front though and Daithi Moloney was unlucky not to put them ahead midway through the half, after his shot was cleared off the line by defender Christopher Caffrey. Artane bit back through Kyle
Ward, in a piece of play that was worthy of a goal. Gareth Lyons picked the ball up in his own box after Campbell, in goal for the hosts, played him the short ball. Lyons barged his way through the entire Drumcondra midfield, before slipping the ball out to the left wing where it was collected by Oisin Murray. Murray looked up to see who was on, picking out Ward at the far post and sending the cross in.
Ward caught it on the bounce and was celebrating, until his shot scratched the wrong side of the woodwork and out for a goal kick.
A couple more chances went begging for both sides, before the deadlock was finally broken on 25 minutes courtesy of Artane's Gavin Markey. This was a sublime piece of skill from Markey, as be sent home a Liam McGrath corner with an overhead kick from five yards out.
Artane had barely finished celebrating the goal though, when Drumcondra hit back straight up the other end through David Boylan.

Early

Shot-stopper Matthew Campbell was unlucky to concede here, having come out early to brilliantly block Boylan's effort.
Boylan made sure of the rebound though, drawing things level just before the half-time whistle.
Artane were hit early in the second half, going behind after less than two minutes in front .
Luke Flynn put his name on Drumcondra's second, connecting well after a long ball into the box reached him just a couple of yards out. Flynn struck on the volley, smashing home to put the visitors ahead.
Artane were working endlessly now to get back into the game. Sean Lyons was creating all sorts of problems for Drumcondra out on the left, linking up brilliantly with midfield maestro Liam McGrath who was a powerhouse for Artane in the centre of the pitch.
Drumcondra were holding them off though with Ian Lindsay working tirelessly at the back. And it was his block from a last-ditch Artane advance that created the visitors' third and final goal of the game.
Lindsay denied with a block on the line and a pass up the pitch that left the ball in the path of Jason Keating. Keating went it alone. before taking on Campbell in goal.
Again Campbell saved the first effort but was beaten by Keating's second strike after he collected the rebound.
