Drums complete five-star Clifford Cup raid on lusk
LUSK UNITED 3 DRUMCONDRA 5
THE CLIFFORD CUP began in earnest this past weekend as the over 35's set out on the path to headquarters and glory come late spring. Lusk United entertained Drumcondra at the Handball Alley in a bid to retain their unbeaten status at the venue.
Alan Leonard has enjoyed great success at senior level. A member of the all conquering Raheny United side of a couple of seasons back, Leonard has returned to his alma-mater (Drumcondra) and on Saturday the nippy front man ' was the star of the show.
Leonard bagged a hat-trick for Drums on a day that didn't begin too well for them. They found themselves two down with barely 10 minutes played.
In the second minute Ray Kelly got his head to a comer from the right w give Lusk the lead. When Andy O'Connor rifled home from the edge of the box in the ninth minute things weren't looking roo good for the visitors.
Midway through the half however Leonard, who wouldn't have beeo the biggest man on the pitch, rose highest at the far post to head a corner home from the left. Leaving the half-time score 2-1 to the home side.
The Lusk rearguard obviously didn't learn anything as, in the 49th minute, Leonard rose highest again from a corner to head home again at the far post w level matters .
Five minutes later the hosts were back in front. Mark Nolan finished off an excellent move that involved most oftbe front men, when he fired low to the net from 16 yards.
The lead ouly lasted two minutes however as Leonard picked up the matcll ball by completing his hat-trick with a low drive from the edge of the box.
On the hour mark Drums took the lead for the first time. Leonard was involved again as his ball into the box caused confusion before it finally fell to Neil Doyle who steered it home from close in.
Lusk went in search of a leveller but on 71 Doyle pouneed again w put this excellent Clifford Cup tie to bed.
